Club Med Miami

August 2015

16th August 2015: At 8am we all met up at the Tennis Club. With some boys not having slept all night due to their excitement of their forth coming adventure! Of course everyone was on time, and with us all wearing our matching branded Under Armour T-shirts, we felt like a TEAM! Boy’s ages ranged from 9 years old to 14 years of age. Made our way all together to Manchester Airport for our flight @12noon into Miami and had a blast playing games and watching films on the new planes of Thomas Cook Airlines TV screens.

Got to the Club Med Tennis Academy at around 8pm in the evening (Florida time), where we were greeted and shown around the campus by a friendly chap who made us feel welcome and settled in instantly.

Day 1 of training: 8.30am: All boys feeling a little tired but so fired up about the training, the adrenaline took over and boys got through the day with temperatures reaching over 35 celcius and 80 % humidity. Each day consisted of 2 hours of fitness and 4 hours of tennis with a break between 11.30-1.30pm for a lunch break and a dive in the pool to cool off and regenerate for the afternoon training. The boys soon realised what it was like to train like a Pro in order to become as good as you can be! 6 days later, having done 35 hours in a week (which is what most of the boys would do in 6 months here in the UK), they made significant improvements in all aspects: physical, mental, technical and tactical skills. Club Med Academy has 20 tennis courts, golf course, golf range, 2 big swimming pools, a private beach with activities and entertainment throughout the day and night. With this, the boys and myself were kept busy and always had something to do outside their tennis training.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at Club Med is just phenomenal! 5 star food buffet for each meal with such a variety of choice was a time that we all looked forward too.

A week later on 23rd August, we drove up to Orlando for a week of touring the Parks and entertainment all around. Half of the boys had never been to America, so to them, this was a trip of a lifetime. Got to our villa and not only surprised of how big the home was, but to find a ping pong table, pool table and fusball table in the home, with your own private pool, this was surreal! We toured around Universal Studios, Islands of adventure and Wet n Wild water-park. With unlimited access to all these parks for the week, and having the best shopping malls in the USA, the boys forgot what “tired” was!   Boys wanted to stay another week! For breakfast, we ate in the villa, for lunch we grabbed a quick bite to eat and dinner was always an event, where we chose a restaurant for us all to go and enjoy.

Unfortunately all good things come to an end, 30th of August came round and we were on our way back to the UK. Although boys didn’t want to leave, they were over excited about sharing their adventure and experience with their families and friends. Despite having such a diverse age range, these boys all became good friends and have come back practising and encouraging each other.

Having trained myself for 6 years at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, as a coach and former player, I can assure you that Club Med Academy is an incredible place for players to train and take their game to the next level.

I am so greatful to have been part of this trip and looking forward to helping other coaches, schools and other organizations in replicating this.

What a great success!
